Anna Sui is the New York label of Detroit-born, first-generation Chinese American designer Anna Sui, who launched it in 1981 while working for sportswear firm Glenora - a small collection she took to a trade show drew orders from Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s and a full-page New York Times ad, which got her fired and prompted her to spend her final paycheck on a first full collection. She staged her debut runway show in 1991 with Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista and Christy Turlington walking for free, won the CFDA Perry Ellis Award for New Fashion Talent in 1992 and the CFDA Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award in 2009. Her signature is a maximalist mash-up: vintage and bohemian prints, grunge and glam-rock attitude, florals, gothic touches and rock’n’roll styling, extended since 1999 into fragrance and cosmetics whose packaging is collectible in its own right. Still independent and still producing every collection in New York’s Garment District, where the brand has been based since the founding.
